Population Screening

Population screening involves examining a generally healthy population to identify asymptomatic cases of a disease or condition. Early detection of these diseases can lead to better treatment outcomes.

The RIVM Center for Population Screening (RIVM/BVO) is responsible for the national coordination of population screenings on behalf of the Minister of Health. The population screenings offered on Bonaire are also coordinated under the direction of RIVM/CvB.

The implementing organization on Bonaire coordinates four population screening programs. Currently, the following population screenings funded by RIVM are running on Bonaire:

  • Neonatal Heel Prick Screening

  • Pregnancy Screening

  • Cervical Cancer Screening

  • Colorectal Cancer Screening

BONLAB has a task in the distribution and collection of the materials needed for the colorectal cancer screening. For cervical cancer screening and the forthcoming colorectal cancer screening, laboratory diagnostics are outsourced to laboratories on other islands.
